Equity in Early Education and Infant/Toddler Care

The Castle Foundation seeks to fund programs and projects which promote a holistic approach to children pre-natal to 36 months of age. We advocate for connecting child well-being with early childhood education for children 3,4 and 5 years old. We see the whole child in developmental continuity.
To that end our grants, limited as they may be, invest funds for the following:

Foundational Support for Health and Nutrition

  • Prenatal and postnatal care: Fund clinics or mobile health units that provide maternal health services, vaccinations, and screenings.
  • Nutrition programs: Distribute formula, fortified cereals, and breastfeeding support to combat malnutrition and promote healthy growth.
  • Diaper banks and hygiene kits: Provide essentials like diapers, wipes, and baby soap to reduce health risks and ease financial burdens.

Early Development and Learning

  • Early Head Start: We support Early Head Start with its wrap-around services and well-trained staff.
  • Early intervention services: Support programs that screen for developmental delays and provide therapies (speech, occupational, physical).
  • Parent education: Fund workshops or home-visiting programs that teach caregivers about child development, bonding, and responsive parenting.
  • Books and toys: Distribute age-appropriate books and sensory toys to stimulate cognitive and emotional growth.

Safe and Stable Environments

  • Shelter and housing support: Assist families facing homelessness or unstable housing with safe places to live.
  • Domestic violence prevention: Fund services that protect children from trauma and support caregivers in crisis.
  • Foster care and kinship support: Provide resources for caregivers raising children outside of their birth families.

Community-Based Solutions

  • Culturally responsive care: Invest in programs that reflect the community’s language, values, and traditions—especially important in diverse places like Hawai’i.
  • Public preschool advocacy: Support efforts to expand access to early childhood education, especially for underserved populations.
  • Local partnerships: Collaborate with trusted community organizations to ensure resources are distributed equitably and effectively.
